Vasich Denies Lenoir-Rhyne Comeback With Late Winner
HICKORY, N.C. -- Catawba squandered a two-goal lead, but got a game-winner from freshman Shelby Vasich (Chatsworth, Calif./El Camino Real) with just over three minutes remaining to top host Lenoir-Rhyne 3-2 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday at Irwin Belk Track. The win keeps the Catawba Indians unbeaten in league play, moving to 3-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The Bears fall to 3-2-2 and 0-1-1.
As it has in every match this season, Catawba went on top in the opening 10 minutes. Erin Feldman (Charlotte, N.C./Olympic) got the opening goal, scoring on a shot from the top of the box that glanced off the right post and into the net. It was the lone goal of the opening half.
The Lady Indians stretched the lead in the 68th minute when Bailey Howell (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) collected a ball down the right side, cut back against a defender and lofted a shot to the back post over Bear keeper Andrea Leano.
The Bears produced seven of their 10 corners in the final half and finally broke through when Jessica Feronti sent in a long ball that was headed in by Hannah Van Earden with just over 12 minutes to play. It would be another header by Miranda Simon that tied the match in the 83rd minute.
Catawba struck right back after the tying goal. Much like Howell’s earlier goal, Vasich ran down a ball down the right side, cut back against a defense and lofted a ball to the back post that Leano got fingertips on, but not enough to keep it out of the net. The goal came just three minutes after the Bears had tied the match.
Lenoir-Rhyne out-shot Catawba 19-9 with Shannon Hardy (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) recording seven saves. Leano had a pair of saves for Lenoir-Rhyne.
Catawba will host Coker at the Frock Soccer Complex on Saturday at 5 pm.
