Hill's Hat Trick Leads Women's Soccer Past Coker
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba stayed undefeated in league action, posting a 4-0 shutout of visiting Coker in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday at the Frock Soccer Complex. Freshman Caitlin Hill (Advance, N.C./W. Forsyth) scored a hat trick in helping the Catawba Indians improve to 4-1-1 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. The Cobras fell to 2-4 and 1-3.
Catawba took the early lead as is has in every match this season. Becky Frost (Crofton, Md./Arundel) slid home a rebound off an initial shot from Bailey Howell (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman). Howell’s shot was saved by Cobra keeper Ashton Knopf, but her parry glanced off the crossbar and back to Frost, who had an open goal to tuck home the rebound.
The Lady Indians failed to convert a penalty kick in the 33rd minute when Kiersten Peck’s (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) attempt hit off the left post. Catawba did take a 2-0 lead to the break when Mariah Osenga (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth) freed Hill with a perfect through ball into the box. Hill touched the ball past Knofp and knocked home the goal from the left side.
Hill put home a couple of late goals to finish off the hat trick. In the 76th minute, she dripped in from the left to the top of the box to score then capped the scoring with a shot from 25 yards. It is the first hat trick for a Lady Indian since 2009 when Ashley Huhn tied a school record with four in a 9-0 win against Coker.
Catawba held a 27-6 edge in shots with a 7-3 advantage in corners. Liz Nail (King, N.C./W. Stokes) made one save in posting her second shutout on the season. Knopf made seven stops for Coker.
Catawba hosts Pfeiffer in non-conference action on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
