Men's Soccer Nets Five in Win Over Coker
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Host Catawba netted five goals and claimed a 5-1 win over Coker in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday night at the Frock Soccer Complex. The win levels the Catawba Indians record at 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 3-3-1 and 2-2. The five goals are the most by the Catawba men since dismantling Chowan 12-0 in 2013.
Freshman Daniele Proch (Arco, Italy) scored the first of his three goals in the 28th minute to put the Indians on top to stay. Proch settled a cross from Hunter Faust (Statesville, N.C./Statesville), turned and fired home from about 12 yards out.
Ian Orr (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) doubled the margin 10 minutes later. Jack Pettett (Hove, England) played a ball into the box that Orr was able to head into the left corner from about 10 yards out. Coker got a goal back just before the half when Aladdin Elfares slid home a cross to the back post from Kohl Thompson.
Orr restored the two-goal edge just under eight minutes into the second half. His shot from the top of the box, caromed off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net. Proch would add two final goals to complete his hat track. The first came on a penalty kick in the 70th minute and the last when he tucked a shot inside the left post after a cross through the box from Declan Stimson (Adelaide, Australia).
The Indians scored on half its shot attempts, holding a 10-6 edge on the Cobras. Coker had a 5-3 edge in corners. Joe Gonzalez (Marion, N.Y./Marion/LeMoyne) recorded the lone Catawba save in his 81 minutes of action. Christian Watts (Plymouth, England) was untested in his nine minutes. Michael Ritterbeck had a pair of saves for Coker.
