Volleyball Storms Past Pfeiffer in Three Sets
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Host Catawba cruised to a three-set win over Pfeiffer in volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improved to 5-7 overall with the 25-10, 25-10 and 25-16 victory. The Falcons fell to 0-11.
Catawba hit a sparkling 46.4% in the win and were led by 10 kills and a pair of blocks from Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance). The Lady Indians also served up 13 aces with four coming from Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill), who also had 11 digs.
The Lady Indians did not commit a hitting error in the opening set with an attack percentage of 64.7%. Pfeiffer led early in the set, going up 7-5 after an ace from Sam Smith. Furr picked up a kill for a 10-9 Catawba lead and after a pair of aces from Allison Benton (High Springs, Fla./St. Francis) the Lady Indians started to roll. A kill from Pfeiffer’s Sydney Freeman made it 12-10, but Catawba ran off the final 13 points on Furr’s serve that included three aces.
Catawba got off to a 6-0 lead in set two. Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan) had an ace and Alexa Marcy (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) two kills. Two kills from Schultz and an ace from Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) pushed the margin to 11-3. Jaida Henderson (Creedmore, N.C./S. Granville) killed off the set point.
The Lady Indians were off quickly in set three as aces from Schultz, Furr and Taylor Martin (Salisbury, N.C./W. Rowan) helped build a 9-2 lead. An ace and a kill from Katie Wilson helped pull Pfeiffer within 14-9, but the Falcons never got closer than five and Howard killed off the match point.
Schultz followed Howard with six kills for Catawba with Marcy adding five. Julia Adams (Canton, Ohio/Massillon-Jackson) delivered 15 assists.
Freeman and Talor Hewitt each had five kills for Pfeiffer. Wilson had four kills, five digs and nine assists.
Catawba returns to league action on Friday as it travels to Lincoln Memorial for a 7 pm match.
