Volleyball Rallies Back To Top Carson-Newman In Five
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Catawba took the final two sets to pull off a five-set win against host Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday at Holt Fieldhouse. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-8 overall and 4-5 in the SAC after the 15-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18 and 15-6 victory. The Lady Eagles fall to 1-12 and 1-8.
After Carson-Newman scored the final two points of set three on a Catawba service error and an ace from Anna Patton, Catawba rallied back. A pair of combo blocks by Allison Benton (High Springs, Fla./St. Francis) and Kimberly Hurtado (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) helped the Lady Indians to an early 5-2 lead in set four. Catawba had doubled-up C-N at 14-7 following a kill from Allie Grubb (Trinity, N.C./Wheatmore).
Meredith Furr’s (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) ace pushed the Catawba lead to 19-11. Abbie McFarlane delivered four kills in a run that brought Carson-Newman to within 21-18. The Lady Indians would run off the final four points of the set to force the decider on kills from Grubb, Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael) and Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance) along with an ace from Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee).
Hopper put down back-to-back kills to start the fifth set and Catawba raced to an 8-1 lead. C-N could only cut the deficit to 10-4 and Hurtado’s kill ended the match.
Benton posted 14 kills with 18 digs and four blocks for Catawba. Howard added 10 kills and four blocks. Hurtado recorded five blocks and collected seven kills. Evan Shultz (Richmond, Va./Monocan) served four aces, Furr recorded 22 digs and Stanford handed out 39 assists.
McFarlane led Carson-Newman with 16 kills. Alex Biro posted 10 kills and eight blocks. Libero Taylor Lowe added 28 digs and three aces, while Patton also had three aces.
Catawba returns home on Friday at host Anderson at 7 pm.
