Stimson Lifts Men's Soccer With Overtime Winner
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Declan Stimpson (Adelaide, Australia) scored just over a minute into the final overtime period to give Catawba a 1-0 win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday night at the Frock Soccer Complex. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 5-4-1 and 2-3.
Stimson had not played in the match until coming on late in the first overtime. Early in the final period, Catawba broke through midfield and Daniele Proch (Arco, Italy) played a ball in the middle to Stimson on the right side. Stimson fired past Brevard keeper Eric Lenhart into the left corner for the winner.
Neither team found much offense in the first half, although Catawba’s Matt Wilkinson (Leeds, England) hit the post in the 42nd minute. Catawba put together a flurry of chances midway through the second half, most created by Proch, but could only put one chance on target which Lenhart saved.
Brevard had two solid chances in the first overtime. The first was on a ball played to the far post by Camilo Sosa that hit the back post, but glanced out. In the dying seconds of the period, the Tornados got a free kick just a couple yards outside the box. Ryan McPhillips’ shot hit off the crossbar with 10 seconds on the clock.
Catawba held a 13-6 edge in shots with both team taking four corners. Lenhart had four saves for Brevard, while Joe Gonzalez (Marion, N.Y./Marion/LeMoyne) picked up one save for the Indians.
Catawba travels to Queens on Wednesday for a 5 pm kickoff.
