Men's Golf in Eighth After First Round of Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate


MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Catawba sits in the middle of a 16-team field at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate Men’s Golf Tournament being held at the par-72, 7,020-yard Ocean Ridge Golf Course.  The Catawba Indians shot an opening 296 on Monday and is tied for eighth.

All five Catawba golfers posted scores of 75 or better with Jordan Taylor (Troy, N.C./W. Montgomery/Campbell) carding a 73 to stand in 18th.  Trey Burton (Hickory, N.C./Newton-Conover) and Mack Sheppard (Harrisburg, N.C./Hickory Ridge) both had 74s, while Jesse Vensel (West Alexander, Pa./McGuffey/Pfeiffer) and Tyler Mulkey (Salisbury, N.C./N. Rowan/Charlotte) turned in scores of 75.

The Duke ‘B’ team leads the tournament after an opening score of 275, leading North Greenville by 12 shots and Belmont Abbey by 13.  There is a three-way tie for the individual lead after a round with Belmont Abbey’s Nick Stafford and a pair of Duke golfers, Adam Wood and Alexander Matlari, shooting five-under-par 67s.  The trio leads by three shots over five golfers at 70.
