Men's Soccer Downs Queens 2-1
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba claimed its fourth straight win in men’s soccer action, topping host Queens 2-1 on Wednesday at the Queens Sports Complex. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while the Royals fall to 5-5 and 2-4.
Queens took the early lead as Isaac Walker put home a pass from Ryan Ejezie in the fifth minute. The Indians pulled even in the 30th minute. Daniele Proch (Arco, Italy) put a cross into the box to Thar Thwai (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) and the senior netted his first of the season to send the team to the break tied.
Catawba produced the winning goal in the 67th minute when Ian Orr (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) knocked home a cross from Jack Pettett (Hove, England). Catawba made that goal hold up thanks to a nice defensive effort from Matt Wilkinson (Leeds, England), who saved a ball off the goal line with just three minutes to play.
The Indians edged out Queens in total shots 15-14 with the Royals taking six corners to five for Catawba. Joe Gonzalez (Marion, N.Y./Marion/LeMoyne) made two saves in goal for the Indians. Sergio Lemus totaled five saves for Queens.
Catawba continues a three-game road swing with a trip to Carson-Newman on Saturday for a 3:30 pm kickoff.
