Volleyball Levels SAC Mark With Win Over Anderson

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba grabbed a four-set win over visiting Anderson in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym.  The Catawba Indians took the match by the scores of 25-18, 12-25, 25-17 and 26-24 in improving to 7-8 overall and 5-5 in the SAC.  The Trojans fall to 9-8 and 6-4.

Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance) led the Catawba charge, posting 16 kills and hitting at 37.8%.  The senior made just two errors in 37 swings and also added four blocks.  Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek) and Kimberly Hurtado (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) both had nine kills with McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden) adding eight.

Catawba began to pull away midway in the first set.  Consecutive kills by Howard and a Trojan hitting error send the Lady Indians to a 15-11 lead.  It was 17-12 after a kill from Hoffman and moved to 22-15 after a pair of Catawba blocks and another Anderson attack error.  Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael) had a pair of late kills, including one on set point.

Anderson rolled in set two, jumping out to a 6-1 lead.  Howard got Catawba within 14-10 on a kill, but a 6-0 run by the Trojans extended the lead to 22-11.  Rachel Burts had three kills in the run.  Burts added three more kills to get Anderson to set point which was converted on a Catawba error.

Catawba regrouped for set three and with an ace from Allison Benton (High Springs, Fla./St. Francis) and back-to-back blocks from Garrison, the Lady Indians pulled ahead 7-2.  A Hurtado kills made it 13-6 and Howard’s kills upped the margin to 19-11.  Anderson went on a 5-0 run late to close the gap to 22-17, but a kill from Garrison and a kill and solo block from Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) closed out the set.

The Lady Indians took a 9-5 lead in the fourth set, but it was a tight battle throughout.  Anderson tied it at 11-all on an ace from Emily Conlin, but the Lady Indians used a 4-0 run to go up 15-11.   The Lady Indians held the lead until Anderson tied at 23-all on a kill by Serena Jackson.

After kills from Howard and Jackson the set was still tied at 24-all.  Benton gave Catawba a second match points and Hurtado converted it with a kill following Garrison’s serve.

Stanford handed out 41 assists and also picked up 17 digs, three blocks and three kills.  Libero Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) posted 19 digs, while Benton served a pair of aces.

Burts led Anderson with 14 kills and seven blocks.  Marissa Mitter provided 12 kills and 14 digs, while libero Emily Conard dug up 17 balls.  Conlin had 41 assists, 19 digs, two aces and two blocks.
