Hoffman Has Career Day in Five-Set Win Over Newberry

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take a five-set win for the third time this season in topping visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday at Goodman Gym.  The Catawba Indians got a career-high 17 kills from Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek) in improving to 8-8 overall and 6-5 in the SAC after the 21-25, 25-11, 23-25, 25-14 and 16-14 victory.  The Wolves fall to 9-10 and 6-5.

The Lady Indians fell behind 4-0 to start the final set and were down 8-4 at the changeover.  Down 9-6, Catawba stormed back, winning four straight points to take its first lead of the set.  McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden) had a kill, Hoffman and Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) combined for a pair of blocks then Hoffman produced a kill for the lead.

Kills from Stanford and Hoffman offset Newberry points and an attack error pushed the lead to 13-11.  Newberry rallied to tie after a ball handling error and a kill from Andie Meredith.  A Hoffman kill gave Catawba its first match point, but a serve error pulled Newberry even at 14-14.  Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance) killed off a point to put Catawba up 15-14 and Kimberly Hurtado (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) killed off the final point.

Catawba had fallen behind 5-1 at the beginning of set four before charging back.  A 10-4 run put Catawba up 13-10.  The Lady Indians began to pull away and scored 10 of the set’s final 11 points.  Hoffman and Allison Benton (High Springs, Fla./St. Francis) each had three late kills and the set ended on a combo block by Garrison and Hoffman.

Newberry won a back-and-forth opening set that saw 18 ties and six lead changes when Catawba committed errors on the final four points of the set.  The Lady Indians rolled in set two, hitting 55.6% without an error.  Newberry overcame an early 8-3 deficit to take set three.

Hoffman added six blocks to her career-high kill total and hit at 55.6%, making just two errors in 27 swings.  Garrison and Howard each had 10 kills.  Stanford collected 53 assists with 14 digs, five blocks and five kills.  Libero Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) posted 29 digs.

Logan Hayward led Newberry with 14 kills and 15 digs.  Madison Darby-McClure had 13 kills, while Meredith added a dozen more.  Setter Maggie Marsh handed out 48 assists with 12 digs and seven kills.

Catawba will host Brevard next Friday at 7 pm at Goodman Gym.
