Swim Teams Open Season Against Limestone
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba swim teams opened their season on Friday afternoon at Johnson Pool in a dual meet with visiting Limestone. The Saint men edged out the Catawba Indians 131-127, while the Limestone women picked up a 145-74 victory.
Depth helped Limestone take the men’s meet as Catawba won 11 of the 14 events. Dominik Brus, Ali Hegazi, Federico Borrego Higareda and Joao Barreto each won two individual events. The four also teamed to win two relays. Mario Zaninovic had one win.
Zaninovic opened with a win in the 1000 free. His time of 9:51.39 was the eighth-best all-time and the lone time of the meet that was a top 10 time. Hegazi took wins in the 200 free (1:43.92) and the 500 free (4:51.44). Brus won the 100 back (52.12) and 200 back (1:56.03). Higareda took wins in the 100 breast (58.90) and the 200 breast (2:12.08), while Barreto claimed wins in the 50 free (21.75) and the 100 free (47.94).
On the women’s side, Marcia-Mariel Erhart won three events. She claimed the 1000 free (10:56.65), the 500 free (5:20.78) and the 400 IM (4:52.35). Amy Cujas grabbed two wins, taking the 50 free (25.05) and the 100 free (54.14).
The teams will next be in action on Oct. 22 with a tri-meet at East Carolina. Catawba will take on East Carolina and Campbell.
