Women's Soccer Falls to Saint Leo
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Saint Leo scored three second-half goals to post a 4-1 win over host Catawba in women’s soccer action on Wednesday at the Frock Soccer Complex. The Saints improve to 8-2, while the Catawba Indians fall to 6-4-1.
Saint Leo quickly snapped a 1-1 halftime tie with a pair of goals in the opening five minutes of the second half. Natalie Melillio broke the tie in the 48th minute with the first of her two goals. Rosie Young sent a long ball into the box that took a bounce in front of the Catawba goal where Melillio was able poke home the goal.
Two minutes after Melillio’s goal, Katie Waddell shot back across the goal into the left corner to make it 3-1. Melillio capped the scoring with a solo run down the right side with a shot to the upper back left for a 4-1 lead with 25 minutes remaining.
Catawba scored first. Debbie Killian (Winston-Salem, N.C./E. Forsyth) played a ball that got past a defender and putting Shelby Vasich (Chatsworth, Calif./El Camino Real) though against the keeper. After a touch, Vasich shot past Lion keeper Megan Charlton to put the Lady Indians on top in the 22nd minute. Saint Leo answered within two minutes as Waddell back-heeled a pass to Genevieve Gignac in front of the Catawba goal for the equalizer.
Catawba held an 11-10 edge in shots and created six corner to four for the Lions. Shelby Thompson (Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell/Charlotte) had one save over the first half in goal for Catawba, while Shannon Hardy (Raleigh, N.C./Cuthbertson) also had a save during the second half. Charlton recorded four saves before giving way to Julia Ortiz for the final 10 minutes.
Catawba returns to league action on Saturday, hosting Anderson at 5 p.m.
