Men's Soccer Holds Off Lees-McRae
BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Catawba ran its winning streak to six matches with a 3-2 victory over host Lees-McRae in men’s soccer action on Wednesday at Tate Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 8-3, while the Bobcats fall to 3-9.
Catawba took a quick lead as Tim Frederik-Lange (Limburgerhof, Germany) knocked home a goal in the fifth minute. The Indians doubled the lead five minutes before the half as Jack Ragen (Terrigal, Australia) put in a cross from Tyus Lopez (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek).
The Bobcats cut the margin to 2-1 just before the half. Thomas Deeley got the goal in the 43rd minute, scoring from five yards out off a pass from Nathan Watt.
The Indians regained their two-goal margin in the 58th minute. Philipp Hollenhorst (Muenster, Germany) headed home a free kick from Daniele Proch (Arco, Italy). Proch had also assisted on Catawba’s opening goal. Taylor Gray pulled a goal back for the Bobcats in the final minutes, but the hosts could not come up with a tying goal.
Christian Watts (Plymouth, England) got the call in goal for Catawba and recorded three saves. Tyler Pavlet had six saves for Lees-McRae. Catawba held a 17-15 edge in shots and had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Catawba will host Anderson on Saturday at 7:30 pm.
