Volleyball Dispatches Brevard in Four Sets
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba claimed a four-set win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians picked up its fourth straight win in improving to 9-8 overall and 7-5 in the SAC, winning the match by the scores of 25-20, 17-25, 25-21 and 25-23. The Tornados fall to 4-15 and 3-9.
Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael) delivered 15 kills, while McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden) and Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek) each tallied 11 kills. Garrison added 20 digs and Hoffman produced five blocks.
After the teams split the opening two sets, Catawba won two tight sets to take the match. A 6-1 run midway through the third set gave Catawba a lead at 19-13. Hoffman had a kill and two blocks in the run. Brevard closed to within 22-20 on a kill from Callie Chappell. Chappell answered a Catawba kill by Kimberly Hurtado (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) to keep the Tornados down two, but after an attack error, Hoffman and Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance) combined on a block to end the set.
The Lady Indians jumped to a 6-2 lead early in set four on three kills from Garrison and an ace from Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill). Brevard rallied and tied the set at 7-7 on an ace from Bri Vargas. After the Tornados went up 10-9, Hurtado had two kills and a block as Catawba went back up 15-11.
Brevard tied the set again at 19-all, but Hurtado combined for a block with Hopper then a second with Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) to keep Catawba ahead at 22-20. Back-to-back kills from Savannah Cox staved off two Catawba set points before a service error ended the match.
Cox led Brevard with 16 kills and added three blocks. Chappell and Stephanie Lambert each had 11 kills. Lambert added three blocks and Maggie Weiss served three aces before the error to end the match. Libero Aleksandra Vrvilo recorded 18 digs.
Furr joined Garrison with 20 digs for Catawba. Stanford handed out 44 assists with 11 digs and five kills. Howard posted eight kills and four blocks.
It was a 7-0 run midway through the opening set that provided the Lady Indians with a one-set edge. Hopper had three kills and Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan) served an ace to help Catawba to a 21-14 lead. Garrison had two late kills, including set point. Brevard rolled in set two, leading 6-1 out of the gate. Catawba was within 14-11 before another Brevard surge sent the Tornados to a 20-12 lead.
Catawba hits the road for its next four matches. First up will be a trip to Queens on Tuesday for a 7 pm start.
