Volleyball Falls to Wingate in Four Sets
WINGATE, N.C. -- Wingate topped visiting Catawba in four sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs took the match by the scores of 25-20, 26-28, 25-19 and 25-17 to improve to 22-3 overall and 14-2 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 9-10 and 7-7.
Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael) and Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance) each tallied nine kills for the Lady Indians, while Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek) and Kimberly Hurtado (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) each collected seven kills. Hurtado provided four blocks with Howard and McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden) recording three blocks.
Abby Saehler posted 15 kills for Wingate with Oakley Attaway adding 14. Lynlee Mather had 10 kills and seven blocks. Katie Bludau served five aces and Rachel Alles had 40 assists and 13 digs.
Catawba got of the gates and led 12-9 in the opening set. The Bulldogs would tie the set at 13-all and broke a 15-all tie with a three-point run that provided the margin to take the set. A Saehler kill made it 21-16 and another brought Wingate to set point at 24-19. After a kill from Hopper, Saehler killed off the final point.
The Lady Indians surged to a 10-5 lead in set two after consecutive kills from Allison Benton (High Springs, Fla./St. Francis). Wingate rallied back and after a pair of combo blocks from Mather and Alles along with an ace from Attaway the Bulldogs were up 22-17 after a 6-0 run.
Bludau killed a point to give the Bulldogs a 24-21 lead, but Catawba fought off those set points. After two Wingate errors, Garrison served an ace to tie the set. A kill from Saehler was answered by a Hopper kill and her combo block with Hurtado to push Catawba on top 26-25. Saehler killed off a point, but Hopper and Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) delivered kills to give Catawba the set.
Wingate dominated the third set. Bludau started the set with three aces for a quick 4-1 lead and after three kills from Attaway and an ace from Treslyn Oritz the Bulldogs were up 14-2. Catawba would battle within 22-18 after an ace by Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill), but two kills from Mather and a final one from Alles put the Bulldogs up two sets to one.
The Bulldogs again used a fast start in set four. Bludau had another ace and Attaway two kills as Wingate led 8-1. A kill from Howard brought the Lady Indians within 13-8. Late kills from Stanford, Garrison and Hurtado made it 21-17, but Wingate scored the final four point to take the match.
Furr had 34 digs and served two aces for Catawba. Stanford delivered 35 assists.
Catawba continues a four-match road swing with a trip to Coker on Tuesday for a 6 pm match.
