Football Uses Ground and Pound Approach to Top Brevard

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba enjoyed its Homecoming with a 42-7 romp over visiting Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  Catawba never punted and scored on six of eight possessions, failing only at the end of each half.  The Catawba Indians improve to 4-5 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 1-8 and 0-5.

The Indians churned to scoring drives of ten, nine and 11 plays in the opening quarter to go on top 21-0.  All 65 yards in the opening drive came on the ground with Eamon Smart (Cape Coral, Fla./Cape Coral) getting the score from a yard out.  David Burgess (Morganton, N.C./Freedom) did most of the work with 47 of the yards.

Joseph Dress (Moncks Corner, S.C./Berkeley) capped the ensuing 70-yard drive with an eight-yard run and then threw a one-yard pass to Andy Hunt (Mt. Pleasant, N.C./Mt. Pleasant) to close the quarter with a 74-yard drive.  Burgess finished the first quarter with 100 yards on 11 carries.

Trey Evans (Barnesville, Ga./Lamar Co.) stopped a Brevard drive with an interception near midfield and a return to the Brevard nine.  Dantereus James (Charlotte, N.C./Berry) scored on the next play for a 28-0 cushion that held up until the break.

The Indians made it 35-0 on its lone possession of the third quarter.  A 17-play, 91-yard march that culminated on a Burgess five-yard run.  Kenyatta Greene (Edgewater Park, N.J./N. Burlington Co./WVU) ended the Catawba scoring on a 33-yard run with 6:43 left.

Brevard got on the scoreboard on its final drive.  The Tornados went 80 yards in 12 plays with Jerkevius Hopkins scoring on a three-yard run with 1:23 to play for the final margin.

Catawba doubled the Tornados in yardage with 420 to 210 for the guests.  The Indians amassed 382 yards on the ground with Burgess leading the way with 156 yards.  Smart added 85 yards and Greene 60 on just five carries.  Dress was 7-of-11 passing for 38 yards and ran for 30.  Keyon West (North Augusta, S.C./N. Augusta) had six of the receptions for 37 yards.

Karris Johnson led a Brevard ground game with 69 of the Tornados’ 196 yards.  Bubba Craven added 54 yards rushing and completed two passes for 14 yards.

Defensively, Michael Peppers (Clemson, S.C./Daniel) totaled 14 tackles and one for a loss.  Chris Carpenter (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) and CJ Barksdale (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest) also had a tackle for loss.  Ashud Moore made a dozen tackles for Brevard.

Catawba will host Tusculum on Saturday in its home finale at 1:30 pm.
