Football opens new Shuford with 49-6 win
SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College, ranked 13th in the AFCA Division II Poll, recorded a 49-6 win over Livingstone at the new Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field on Saturday afternoon, claiming the Mayor’s Cup Trophy for the third straight year. It marked the season opener for the Indians, while Livingstone falls to 0-2.Catawba junior quarterback Luke Samples (Elkin, NC) threw for a career-high 312 yards, on 21-of-27 passing, in just over half, while sophomore receiver Corey Ready (Aiken, SC) snagged seven passes for 141 yards and two scores to lead the Tribe. Samples also tied the school record for touchdown passes in a game with four, which he had also done on two other occasions. Rod Tenor (Cooleemee, NC) and Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA) also had touchdown catches for Catawba.
Catawba scored on its first two possessions, ending the first with a one-yard plunge by Rodney Wallace (Bamberg, SC) and the second on a 27-yard strike from Samples to Ready. Livingstone would get its lone score at the start of the second quarter when Joel Ward (Fayetteville, NC) hooked up with Chris Jeter (Jonesville, SC) for a 37-yard touchdown.
Catawba answered with Samples touchdown passes of 52 yards to Ready, 39 yards to Tenor and 11 yards to Carter for a 35-6 edge at the break. Third quarter scoring runs of four yards by Devan Hedrick (Lexington, NC) and five yards by Hollis Owens (Jacksonville, FL) closed out the scoring.
Catawba held a 2-1 edge in time of possession and totaled 479 yards of offense. The Tribe defense held the Blue Bears to just 97 yards, 38 rushing and 59 through the air. Catawba did not suffer a turnover, while picking off a pass and recovering one Livingstone fumble. SaMario Houston (Charlotte, NC) and Marcus Huntley (Morven, NC) had sacks, while Eddie Wall (Albemarle, NC) had the interception. Jason Ocean (Clio, SC) was in on 16 stops for Livingstone.
