Mercer Smashes School 6k Record at NCAA Regional

MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- Freshman Hannah Mercer (Lexington, N.C./N. Davidson) set a new women’s 6k record on Saturday morning at the NCAA II Southeast Regional Meet which was run at the University of Montevallo Cross Country Course.  The Catawba women placed 12th among 27 schools while the men were 18th out of a field of 24.

Mercer covered the course in a time of 22:53 to lower the school mark by more than a minute over the previous best of 23:57 set by Rory Godsey in 2004.  Mercer placed 31st at the meet. 

Five women’s runners posted top 10 times in a 6k.  Abbie Adams (Piedmont, S.C./Wren) notched the third best time in history with a 24:04 and Patience Hunt (Lexington, N.C./W. Davidson) ran a 24:10 to equal the fourth-best time.  Nikki Elminowski (Monroe, N.C./Piedmont) clocked in with the seventh best time (24:21) and Kim Deschka (Kiel, Germany) tied the eight best time at 24:39.

The men also had several times among the top 10 in school history.  Curtis Carmack (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) led the Indians with a 67th-place finish.  His time of 33:10 was the third best 10k on record.  Drew Lake (Greensboro, N.C./Page) clocked in at 33:41 for the fourth-best time and freshman Michal Swepson (Durham, N.C./Research Triangle) posted the sixth best time at 34:31.  Ian Buff (Winston-Salem, N.C./Glenn) claimed the 10th spot with his time of 35:23.
