Women's Basketball Wins Second Straight Down-to-the-Wire Finish
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba won a back-and-forth women’s basketball game with Barton, taking a 74-69 victory in the final game of the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians move to 2-0 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-1.
Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance) converted a three-point play with 21 seconds left to snap a 69-all tie and lift the Lady Indians. After a Barton missed three-pointer, Serena Brown (Ft. Washington, Md./Bowie) clinched the win on a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining.
Rogers finished with a second double-double in as many nights, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Brown would post a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./N. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) led Catawba with 22 points, while Marshauna Butler (Bowie, Md./Bowie/Stony Brook) added 14 points.
Kianna Wynn led Barton with 19 points and eight rebounds. Ciera Williams tallied a dozen points and posted three steals.
The teams were never separated by more than five points with the game tied on 14 occasions and the lead swapping hands 15 times.
Catawba jumped out to a 6-2 lead on baskets by Butler, Johnson and Rogers. Barton claimed the lead after a quarter as Wynn beat the buzzer with a three-pointer for a 17-14 edge.
Wynn’s free throws extended the Bulldog lead to 19-14 early in the second period, but Catawba reclaimed the advantage at 27-26 on Butler’s bucket at the 3:49 mark. Johnson’s three-pointer with 11 seconds left in the half sent the teams to the break tied at 35-all.
Barton led over the first half of the third quarter before a three-point play by Rogers gave the Lady Indians a 44-43 lead at the 5:13 mark. A three-pointer by Morgan Franklin (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) upped the Catawba lead to 52-47. The Bulldogs rallied to tied just before the end of the quarter before Butler sent Catawba to the final period up 54-52.
Rogers gave Catawba a 56-52 lead in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, but after that the teams were not separated by more than three pointers until the very end. The game was tied four times over the first five minutes and the lead swapped hands five times until a free throw by Johnson tied the game at 66-all with 1:56 remaining.
Brown pushed Catawba out front on a three-pointer with 1:10 left, but Tatyana Jackson answered with a three-pointer for Barton with 42 seconds to play. Rogers would get an offensive rebound and layup with 21 seconds remaining and added a free throw with a 72-69 edge. Jackson missed a three-point try with nine seconds left and Brown capped the game on her final free throws.
Both teams shot well, Barton at 46% and Catawba at 45%. The Lady Indians held a big 42-24 edge on the boards and converted 18 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points. Johnson picked up 19 of her points in the first half.
Catawba returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to JC Smith for a 6 pm tip-off.
