Rogers Provides Another Double-Double as Women's Basketball Rolls Past FSU
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba got 26 points and 13 rebounds from Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance) and help force 30 Fayetteville State turnovers en route to a 91-70 win in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-1, while the Broncos fall to 0-4.
Johnson collected her fourth double-double of the season in pacing the Lady Indians. Serena Brown (Ft. Washington, Md./Bowie) followed with 18 points, while handing out seven assists and recording four steals. Marshauna Butler (Bowie, Md./Bowie/Stony Brook) added 12 points and Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./N. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) scored 10.
The Broncos hit their first four shots and raced to an 8-2 lead. Catawba used an 8-0 run to go up 10-8 and would hold a 27-21 edge after a quarter. The Lady Indians never trailed after the opening quarter and build a 51-33 lead at the half. Rogers had 16 of her points and eight of her rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
Brown converted a three-point play early in the third quarter to push the lead to 23 points. Fayetteville State would trim the deficit to 14 on several occasions, but could get no closer.
Yakima Clifton led FSU with 15 points and nine rebounds. Tajah Clark and Kayla Phifer each had 10 points. Phifer added seven assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Catawba shot 45% in the win and held a 48-38 edge on the boards. The Lady Indians held a 22-9 edge in second chance points and a 29-14 advantage in points off turnovers. Catawba had 18 miscues. Alexis Newbold (Bowie, Md./Bowie) picked up nine points, while Morgan Franklin (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) had seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
Catawba opens league play on Tuesday, traveling to Coker for a 6 pm tip against the Cobras.
