SALISBURY, N.C. -- Junior Serena Brown (Ft. Washington, Md./Bowie) scored a career-high 22 points and senior Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./N. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) joined Catawba’s 1,000-point club in a 77-55 win over Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym.  The Catawba Indians improve to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 2-7 and 0-3.

Catawba used a 12-0 run early in the first quarter to break the contest open.  Johnson and Marshauna Butler (Bowie, Md./Bowie/Stony Brook) both have five points in the run that put the Lady Indians up 16-3.  The Lions only reduced the margin under single digits once after that when Jenny Edwards cut the deficit to 25-16 at the 6:35 mark of the second quarter.

Johnson answered with a three-point play that pushed over the 1,000-point plateau and Catawba went on to lead by 16 at the break.  Johnson is the 16th women’s basketball player to score 1,000 points in a Catawba uniform.

Mars Hill went nearly six minutes without scoring to start the second half, missing its first 11 shots, and fell behind 50-24.  A Paige Chavis three-pointer early in the fourth quarter cut the margin to 17 points, the closest the Lions would get in the second half.

Brown’s 22 points were aided by an 11-for-12 effort at the line.  She also added seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.  Johnson canned 17 points and handed out five assists.  Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance) delivered her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Chavis was the lone Lion in double figures with 15 points.  Edwards had eight points and eight rebounds.

Mars Hill shot just 29.8% for the game.  Catawba hit on 37.5% which included a 60% first quarter when the Lady Indians built a 23-11 lead.  Catawba dominated the glass, holding a 52-36 edge that including 19 rebounds on the offensive end.

Catawba hits the road for a pair of league games next week.  The Lady Indians are at Carson-Newman on Wednesday at 6 pm.
