Arrington Reaches 1,000 Points as Men's Basketball Rolls Past Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba senior KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh/Henry CC) scored a game-high 26 points to finish with 1,000 career points in a 90-70 victory over visiting Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians win for the fourth straight time in improving to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 3-5 and 1-2.
Mars Hill scored the first seven points and led 10-2 after a three-pointer by Bennett Wilson. Catawba responded and cut the deficit to one after five straight points from an Arrington and the Indians took the lead at 15-14on a layup by Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna).
The Lions were able to recoup a seven-point edge, but when Arrington scored on a jumper for a 30-28 Indian lead with 6:45 left in the half, Catawba never trailed again. A tip in and layup by Arrington pushed the lead to 38-31 and his jumper in the lane had the Indians up 44-33 and was the last of his 19 first-half points.
Catawba led 46-36 at the break and started the second half with back-to-back three-pointers by Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg). Catawba kept a hefty margin the rest of the way with Arrington getting his 1,000th point as he completed a three-point play with 11:05 left for a 77-54 edge.
The Indians shot 50% in the win and dominated inside with 60 points in the paint. Catawba also enjoyed a 54-31 bulge on the glass with 19 offensive rebounds.
Arrington hit on 11-of-16 shots to score his 26 points. Taylor followed with 19 points, on 8-of-12 shooting, and pulled down seven rebounds. Morrison tacked on a dozen points and Malik Constantine (Binghamton, N.Y./Olympic(NC) HS) had 10.
Vernon Jackson had 15 points to lead Mars Hill. Wilson collected 14 points. Mars Hill went 11-of-30 behind the arc.
Catawba will be in action at home on Monday for an 11 am tip off with JC Smith.
