Men's Basketball Holds Off JCSU in Front of Big Education Day Crowd
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba held off a late rally from Johnson C. Smith to earn an 80-77 win in men’s basketball action on Monday morning at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians claimed their fifth straight win as they move to 8-2. The Golden Bulls fall to 3-6.
Catawba never trailed in the contest that tipped off at 11 am on Education Day. Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) scored 32 seconds into the game to put the Indians up 2-0 and Catawba went on to lead by 11 at the break. JCSU charged back from a nine-point deficit with eight minutes to pull even a layup from Robert Davis with 3:24 remaining.
Malik Constantine (Binghamton, N.Y./Olympic(NC) HS) had back-to-back buckets for Catawba to push the Indians on top 77-73 at the 1:53 mark. The Golden Bulls twice cut the margin to two and had a chance to tie in the final 20 seconds, but Troy Warren (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) rebounded a miss.
KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh/Henry CC) went to the line with five seconds remaining, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg) grabbed a big offensive rebound and made the second of two free throws for the 80-77 edge. Davis missed a final chance to tie on a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Catawba raced away in the final minutes of the first. JC Smith had cut an eight-point deficit to 32-30 with 1:36 before the break before the Indians went on a 10-1 run to close the half. Constantine started the run with a three-pointer and Morrison capped the half with a three-pointer in the final seconds for a 42-31 edge.
Constantine led Catawba with 23 points, going 9-of-14 from the floor. Arrington scored all 17 off his points after the break. Morrison scored a dozen points, while Taylor collected 13 points, six rebounds, six assists, three steals and blocked four shots.
Davis posted 18 points for the Golden Bulls. Christian Williams had a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Gabon Williams scored 13 points and Christian Kirchman added a dozen.
Catawba travels to Carson-Newman on Wednesday for a league game with the Eagles at 8 pm.
