Taylor Surpasses 1,000 Career Points in Loss at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Carson-Newman pulled away late and claimed a 78-71 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Holt Fieldhouse.  The Eagles upped their record to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians saw a five-game winning streak snapped in falling to 8-3 and 2-3.

The teams had battled through 14 ties and an eighth lead change when Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) put Catawba on top 61-60 with 3:30 to go.  The Eagles answered on a basket by Shaun Jones that started an 11-0 run that gave Carson-Newman a 71-61 bulge with 4:33 left.

Catawba rallied in the final four minutes.  Two free throws by Troy Warren (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) and a steal and dunk from Taylor pulled the Indians within 73-68 with 1:35 remaining.  Ben Sealey (Hampton, Va./Menchville/Va. Intermont) rebounded a C-N miss and fed Rakeen Brown (Hampton, Va./Bethel/Delaware St.) and his three-pointer made it 73-71 with 55 seconds to play.

Carson-Newman drew a foul and Charles Clark made one of two free throws with 34 seconds left.  Catawba missed a layup and Zack Pangallo sank two free throws to extend the Eagle lead to 76-71.  C-N added two more free throws with nine seconds left for the final margin.

Taylor led Catawba with 22 points and went over 1,000 for his career.  He added six assists and three steals.  Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg) scored 18 points with Malik Constantine (Binghamton, N.Y./Olympic(NC) HS) adding 10 points and nine rebounds.

Clark scored 22 points to lead Carson-Newman.  Malik Abraham collected 21 points with Jones recording a double-double with 13 points and a dozen rebounds.  Sawyer Williams also scored 13 points.

Carson-Newman shot 49% for the game to just 35% for Catawba.  The Eagles also held a 39-35 edge on the glass.

Catawba is back in action on Saturday as the Indians head to Anderson for its final game before the Christmas break at 4 pm against the Trojans.
