Butler's Double-Double Helps Women's Basketball Past Anderson
ANDERSON, S.C. -- Catawba scored a 77-63 win over host Anderson, one of the preseason league favorites, in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. The Lady Indians, still playing without Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance), improve to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 7-2 and 4-1.
A quick 7-0 run to start the second half gave Catawba a comfortable lead it never let go. Marshauna Butler (Bowie, Md./Bowie/Stony Brook) had two baskets, while Alexis Newbold (Bowie, Md./Bowie) had a basket and a free throw to put Catawba up 43-33. A three-pointer by Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./N. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) extended the lead to 50-39 midway through the quarter and a layup by Brianna Hodges (Waldorf, Md./N. Point) pushed the margin to 57-42 late in the frame.
Catawba took its largest lead at 69-51 with 4:27 remaining. Anderson tried to rally late and cut the deficit to nine with two minutes left, but the Lady Indians went 7-of-8 at the line down the stretch to grab the win.
Serena Brown (Ft. Washington, Md./Bowie) led Catawba with 22 points and handed out seven assists. Johnson added 17 points with Butler posting a double-double with 16 points and a dozen rebounds. Jasmine Franklin, Heather Jankowy and Madison Baggett all scored 13 points to pace Anderson.
The Lady Indians shot nearly 50% for the game, canning 28 of 58 shots. Catawba went 7-of-14 behind the arc. Anderson hit on 39% (24-61) and was just 5-of-20 (25%) from three-point range.
Catawba will finish off its pre-Christmas schedule with an exhibition game at UNC Wilmington on Monday at 7 pm.
