Women's Basketball Hangs With UNCW Until Final Quarter
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Catawba women’s basketball team closed its pre-Christmas schedule with a 91-65 exhibition loss to host UNC Wilmington on Monday night at Trask Coliseum. The win for the Seahawks improves UNCW to 5-5.
Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./N. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) had another outstanding effort for Catawba as she scored a game-high 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting. She went 6-of-9 from behind the arc. Serena Brown (Ft. Washington, Md./Bowie) followed with a dozen points and dished out nine assists. Marshauna Butler (Bowie, Md./Bowie/Stony Brook) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Madison Raque canned eight three-pointers and scored 28 points to lead UNC Wilmington. Diamond Willis collected 18 points and nine rebounds, while Timber Tate tallied 11 points. Rebekah Banks pulled down 10 rebounds to help the Seahawks control the boards by a 48-27 margin with 19 coming on the offensive glass.
UNC Wilmington pulled out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter, but Catawba rallied over the next 10-minute segment to reduce the margin to 42-38 by the break. Johnson had 17 of her points in the first half with Brown adding 10.
Down nine (55-46) midway through the third quarter, Catawba rallied back. The Lady Indians went on a 10-1 run to tie the game on Johnson’s three-point play with 1:57 to go in the quarter. UNCW would score the final five points of the from on two free throws and a three-pointer by Willis to lead 61-56.
Johnson had Catawba within four on a three-pointer at the 9:19 mark of the fourth quarter and on a jumper at the 8:38 mark to make it 65-61. The Lady Indians hit a drought from there as UNCW began to pull away. Catawba went six minutes without scoring and the Seahawks used the time to race ahead 88-61 until a three-pointer by Mia Angelo (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Socastee) ended the 23-0 spurt with 1:58 remaining.
Catawba returns to action on New Year’s Eve, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 pm on December 31 at Goodman Gym.
