Johnson and Rogers Pace Women's Basketball Past Brevard

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rolled to a 90-64 victory over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Gym.  The Catawba Indians improve to 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 5-7 and 1-7.

With below freezing temperatures outside, Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./N. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) and Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance) heated up the floor of Moir Court.  The due combined for 45 points and hit on 18 of 25 shots.  Johnson tallied 23 points, missed just one shot, and was a perfect 6-fo-6 behind the arc.  Rogers canned 11-of-17 from the floor in scoring 22 points.

Catawba raced to a 20-8 lead after a quarter then shot 65% (11-of-17) in the second quarter to move ahead 51-31 at the break.

Down 24-8 after Rogers hit consecutive baskets to open the second quarter, Brevard had its best spell as the Tornados rallied to within 27-22 to force a Lady Indian timeout.  It was 36-29 with just under four minutes left in the half when a Rogers layup then a steal and three-point by play Marshauna Butler (Bowie, Md./Bowie/Stony Brook) sparked Catawba.

The Lady Indians scored the final 10 points of the half to grab the 51-31 edge and were never threatened in the final half.  Coming off a school-record 14 three-pointers on Wednesday against Queens, Catawba canned nine from behind the arc in the opening half against Brevard and finished with 13 in the game.

Madison Lenox scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace Brevard.  Kyley Clark added 11 points and AnnaLee Bollinger chipped in with 10.

Serena Brown (Ft. Washington, Md./Bowie) dished out a career-high 10 assists and recorded three steals for Catawba.  Butler tallied nine points with Elizabeth Webb (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell) and Alexis Newbold (Bowie, Md./Bowie) each scoring eight.

Catawba begins a stretch of three straight road games at Wingate on Wednesday at 6 pm.
