WINGATE, N.C. – After squandering a 15-point, first-half lead, Wingate closed with a 19-5 run to grab a 97-82 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena.  The Bulldogs improve to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 10-5 and 4-5.

Wingate rode the hot hand of Mike Baez, who had 18 of his 30 points in the opening half.  He went 6-of-7 shooting with a trio of three-pointers to help Wingate storm to a 41-26 edge late in the first half.  Catawba made a push in the final two minutes with an 8-0 run to close within 41-34 at the break.

The Indians continued its momentum into the second half and tied the game five minutes into the final half at 48-all on a layup by KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh/Henry CC).  Arrington’s free throws with 13:42 left gave the Indians a 52-50 lead.

The teams would battle back-and-forth over the next five minutes before the Bulldogs spurted out to a 74-67 edge with 6:14 to go.  The Indians cut the margin to a single point twice, the last time on a dunk by Malik Constantine (Binghamton, N.Y./Olympic (NC)) at 78-77 with 3:35 remaining.  The Bulldogs scored the next 11 points and pulled away in the closing minutes.

Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) led the Indians with 28 points.  Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg) added 16 points and joined Taylor and Arrington as a member of the 1,000-point club.  Arrington and Constantine chipped in with 10 points apiece.

Baez canned 8-of-11 from the field and was a perfect 11-of-11 at the line in scoring his 30 points.  Anthanee Doyle kicked in with 18 points and Isiah Cureton had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Zeriq Lolar also reached double figures with 12 points.

Wingate outshot Catawba 48% to 37% and were dominate at the line.  The Bulldogs hit on 28-of-30 (93%) with Catawba going 27-of-38 (71%).
