Morrison Surpasses 1,000-Point Plateau in Loss at Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. – After squandering a 15-point, first-half lead, Wingate closed with a 19-5 run to grab a 97-82 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 10-5 and 4-5.
Wingate rode the hot hand of Mike Baez, who had 18 of his 30 points in the opening half. He went 6-of-7 shooting with a trio of three-pointers to help Wingate storm to a 41-26 edge late in the first half. Catawba made a push in the final two minutes with an 8-0 run to close within 41-34 at the break.
The Indians continued its momentum into the second half and tied the game five minutes into the final half at 48-all on a layup by KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh/Henry CC). Arrington’s free throws with 13:42 left gave the Indians a 52-50 lead.
The teams would battle back-and-forth over the next five minutes before the Bulldogs spurted out to a 74-67 edge with 6:14 to go. The Indians cut the margin to a single point twice, the last time on a dunk by Malik Constantine (Binghamton, N.Y./Olympic (NC)) at 78-77 with 3:35 remaining. The Bulldogs scored the next 11 points and pulled away in the closing minutes.
Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) led the Indians with 28 points. Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg) added 16 points and joined Taylor and Arrington as a member of the 1,000-point club. Arrington and Constantine chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Baez canned 8-of-11 from the field and was a perfect 11-of-11 at the line in scoring his 30 points. Anthanee Doyle kicked in with 18 points and Isiah Cureton had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Zeriq Lolar also reached double figures with 12 points.
Wingate outshot Catawba 48% to 37% and were dominate at the line. The Bulldogs hit on 28-of-30 (93%) with Catawba going 27-of-38 (71%).
Catawba travels to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday for a 4 pm tipoff.
