Women's Basketball Uses Big Second Half to Knock Off Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Catawba junior Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance) scored 25 points to lead the visiting Catawba Indians to a 70-52 South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball win over Newberry on Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena. The Catawba Indians improve 11-5 overall and 8-3 in the SAC with the Wolves falling to 11-6 and 6-5.
Catawba pulled away in the third quarter to take the win. Trailing 37-34 after a three-pointer by Newberry’s Nicola Handreck, the Lady Indians responded with an 11-0 run. Rogers started the push with a layup and Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./N. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) followed with a three-pointer to put Catawba up to stay at 39-37 with 6:34 left.
A three-pointer by Elizabeth Webb (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell) upped the margin to 50-39 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Indians kept a double-digit lead the rest of the way going up by 15 midway through the final period and as much as 20 in the closing minutes.
Rogers connected on 10-of-15 shots in scoring her game-high total with 15 coming in the opening half. Johnson had 10 of her 12 points after the break. Madison Hallman (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) connected for 10 points.
Shelby Britten tallied 21 points for Newberry, but was only 7-of-21 from the field and 3-of-12 from behind the arc. Handreck and Meg Essex each tossed in 12 points. Handreck also struggled shooting, making 4-of-18 shots and only 1-of-10 from long range.
Catawba got off to a quick start, hitting 10-of-13 shot in the first quarter to go up 22-14. The Lady Indians made just 3-of-14 in the second quarter as Newberry closed the gap to 30-27. The Wolves started the second half on a three-pointer by Britten and two layups by Essex. Handreck’s lone three-pointer gave Newberry a brief lead at 37-34 before the 11-0 Catawba run.
After its struggles in the second quarter, Catawba went on to can 52% in the second half and hit on an even 50% (25-of-50) for the game. Newberry made just 18-of-64 (28%) of its attempts and were 4-of-27 (15%) behind the arc. The Lady Indians held a 42-35 edge on the boards.
Catawba returns home on Saturday, hosting Tusculum at 2 pm. The teams met earlier in December with the Lady Indians claiming a 60-55 victory.
