Higareda Leads Swim Meet vs. LR With Three Wins
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba fell to Lenoir-Rhyne in men’s and women’s swimming action on Friday night at the Johnson Poll. The Bears men pulled out a two-point win 130-128, while the women topped the Catawba Indians 141-107. Catawba won 21 of the 28 total events.
Federico Borrego Higareda won three individual events for the men and was also part of the winning 400 medley relay. Joao Barreto and Aly Hegazi each won two individual events and were on both relay winning teams, while Mario Zaninovic had two wins and was part of a winning relay.
Emily Najar, Amy Cujas and Cassie Shear all won two individual races for the women and were on both winning relay teams. Jess Daniel and Susanne Reeg had one individual win and were on one of the relay teams.
Higareda won the 100 breast (59.14), 50 free (22.74) and the 200 breast (2:11.05). Barreto took wins in the 200 free (1:44.33) and 100 fly (51.90), while Hegazi claimed the 100 free (48.25) and the 500 free (4:48.88). Zaninovic was first in the 1000 free (10:06.96) and 200 fly (1:58.63).
Najar claimed wins in the 200 free (2:03.18) and 100 free (57.32) with Cujas earning wins in the 100 back (1:02.80) and 50 free (25.46). Shear touched first in the 100 breast (1:09.95) and the 200 breast (2:31.66). Daniel posted a win in the 200 fly (2:21.35), while Reeg took honors in the 100 fly (1:01.44).
Catawba won all four relays. The team of Reeg, Shear, Najar and Cujas opened with a win in the women’s 400 medley relay (4:10.15). Cujas, Shear, Daniel and Najar swam to the win in the 400 free relay (3:49.83). Arnold Blohme, Higareda, Barreto and Hegazi swam the men’s 400 medley relay (3:36.80) with Hegazi, Blohme, Zaninovic and Barreto taking the 400 free relay (3:13.91.
Catawba will next travel to Barton on Saturday, January 28 to take on the Bulldogs and Randolph Macon.
