Morrison's 28 Points, Arrington's Near Triple Double Lead Men's Basketball Over LR
HICKORY, N.C. -- Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg) scored 28 points and Catawba rode a big first-half lead to an 87-76 victory over host Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Shuford Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 15-6 overall and 9-6 in the SAC, winning for the fifth straight time. The Bears fall to 9-11 and 8-7.
KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh/Henry CC) narrowly missed a triple double for Catawba, finishing with 11 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists. Morrison had 16 of his game-high total in the opening half as Catawba raced to a 45-26 advantage.
Catawba scored the game’s first eight points, five by Morrison, and never trailed. With the Bears cold (28% in the first half), the Indians jumped out 16-3 after consecutive buckets by Troy Warren (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman). When Jeremy McLaughlin (Greenville, S.C./Mauldin) scored at the 10:45 mark the lead was 27-8 and it grew to 23 before the break.
The Bears made 10 of their 12 three-pointers after the half to get as close as 11 with 7:38 left. Catawba went back up by 16 before a final run by L-R closed the gap to 81-73 with 41 seconds to play, but the early deficit was too much to overcome. After missing a couple free throws to let the Bears within eight, Catawba canned six straight to end the contest.
Morrison hit on 12-of-18 shots with a pair of three-pointers. Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) posted 13 points with Arrington and Warren each scoring 11. Catawba hit on 55% for the game and dominated the boards with a 48-26 edge.
JacQues Chambers led the Bears with 25 points, while grabbing eight rebounds. He was 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 behind the arc. Darrion Evans tossed in 20 points and Jarvis Calhoun picked up 10 points.
Catawba is at home on Saturday, hosting Carson-Newman at 4 pm.
