AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Catawba opened its season with a pair of losses on Saturday at Jaguar Field on the campus of Augusta University.  The Catawba Indians lost the opener 5-3 to the host Jaguars then fell 4-1 to West Georgia.  It was the opening day for all teams.

An infield single and three walks led to the opening run for Augusta in game one.  Kelsea Hunter drew the walk to force in the initial run and Lydia Hausman’s ground out made it 2-0 after an inning.

It would be more walks the helped double Augusta’s lead in the fourth.  Following a leadoff single and a sacrifice, two walks loaded the bases.  Carolyn Edwards singled home a run to end the day of freshman starter Brooke Walser (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson).  Marni Greenstein then drew a walk to force home another run.

Catawba sliced the deficit in half in the fifth.  Taylor Martin (Salisbury, N.C./W. Rowan), who had led off with a single, came around to score on a throwing error.  Later, a fielder’s choice grounder by Leah Huggins (Hope Mills, N.C./Grays Creek) brought home Keri Faulkner (Albemarle, N.C./N. Stanly).

Augusta tacked on a run in its fifth, while Catawba added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Monica Taylor (Weaverville, N.C./N.Buncombe/UNCW).  The fly ball with the bases loaded brought in Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill), who had doubled with one out.

Stinnard had two of Catawba’s five hits, both doubles.  Walser took the loss, allowing four runs over three and a third innings.  She allowed five hits, but walked six.  Alex Head led Augusta with two hits.  Kristin Mills picked up the win for the Jaguars with a complete game.

Marley Stowers hit two home runs to power West Georgia in game two.  Her solo home run in the first was followed by a two-run shot in the third.  Catawba scored its lone run in the fifth.  Huggins led off with a double and scored on a single by Stinnard.

Stinnard and Huggins had two hits each for Catawba, who had 10 hits, but stranded 10.  Kaylee Cook (Kannapolis, N.C./Brown) took the loss.  She surrendered just four hits and three earned runs.  Adriana Durden grabbed the win, allowing just one run off seven hits in four and third innings.

Catawba will face the same two opponents again on Sunday.
