Rogers Goes Over 1,000 Points With Double-Double in Loss to CN
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Carson-Newman used a late 12-4 run to secure an 80-76 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Eagles improve to 15-7 overall and 12-4 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians suffer their third straight loss in falling to 13-8 and 10-6.
Catawba, who had rallied back from a 12-point deficit at the break with a big third quarter, held a 69-68 lead when Katie Stubblefield put Carson-Newman up to stay with 3:47 remaining. A Stubblefield rebound led to a three-pointer by Kailyn Brooks, the only one in the game for CN, that pushed the lead to 73-69.
A jumper by Serena Brown (Ft. Washington, Md./Bowie) pulled Catawba within 76-73 with 33 seconds left. Stubblefield converted two free throws with 20 seconds remaining and after a pair of Catawba misses, Mike Wester iced the win on a pair of free throw with nine ticks left for an 80-73 lead.
Wester, who had 17 first-half points, scored 23 to lead CN. Briana Smith followed with 19 points and Jessica Simerly had 15 on 7-of-8 shooting. The Eagles hit on 22-of-37 shots (59%) in the first half to grab a 47-35 lead.
Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance), who went over 1,000 career points in the loss, had a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds for Catawba. Brown collected 18 points. Marshauna Butler (Bowie, Md./Bowie/Stony Brook) added 15 points and Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) 13.
After matching Carson-Newman’s hot hand in the opener quarter, Catawba hit just 24% in the second quarter in falling behind. The Lady Indians stormed back in the third quarter to build a six-point lead. Catawba canned 60% in the period to just 27% for Carson-Newman.
Catawba is at home again on Wednesday, hosting Newberry at 6 pm. The Lady Indians earned a 70-52 win in meeting No. 1 this season.
