Brown's Late Jumper Lifts Men's Basketball to Sixth-Straight Win
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Rakeen Brown (Hampton, Va./Bethel/Delaware St.) hit a go-ahead jumper with eight seconds remaining and host Catawba withstood a last chance by Carson-Newman to prevail 77-76 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 16-6 overall and 10-6 in the SAC and pick up a sixth straight win for the first time since 2008-09. The Eagles fall to 13-9 and 10-6.
Carson-Newman had trailed by 13 with eight minutes left, but chipped away and retook the lead at 72-71 on a three-pointer by Malik Abraham with 2:29 to play. The teams then traded the lead back-and-forth. A put back by Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg) was answered on a layup by Sawyer Williams with 55 seconds to go.
KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh/Henry CC) converted a second-chance basketball with 33 second left to give Catawba a 75-74 lead, but could not increase Catawba’s lead after his steal with 23 seconds remaining. Morrison fouled on Arrington’s missed free throw and Charles Clark hit the last two free throws of a perfect 10-for-10 night to put CN on top 76-75 with 20 second left.
Brown answered for Catawba with his jumper just inside the top of the key with eight seconds to play. Clark drove to the basket for CN, but Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) came up with Catawba’s ninth block of the night with 2.3 seconds remaining. Williams was forced to take an off balanced jumper at the buzzer that was well off the mark.
Arrington led Catawba with 22 points on 10-of-19 shooting, despite going just 2-of-8 from long range. He had nine rebounds, as did Taylor, who scored 19 points. Morrison collected 15 points with five blocks with Brown reaching double figures with 11 points.
All five Eagle starters reached double figures. Abraham led the way with 17 points with Clark adding 15. Williams and Zack Pangallo each scored 14 points and Shaun Jones added 11.
Carson-Newman built an eight-point midway through the first half, but Catawba rallied to lead 33-32 at the break. Catawba hit three of its three-pointers during a two-minute stretch where a 14-3 run gave the Indians a 65-52 lead with just over eight minutes left.
Catawba will host Newberry on Wednesday at 8 pm. The Indians pulled out a 100-99 overtime win in the first meeting this season.
