Softball Loses Pair of One-Run Games to Augusta and West Georgia
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Catawba lost a pair of one run games in softball action on Sunday at Augusta University’s Jaguar Field. The Catawba Indians fell to 0-4 with a 5-4 loss to Augusta and a 6-5 setback in nine innings to West Georgia. Augusta improved to 2-1 with West Georgia moving to 3-0.
Catawba led West Georgia by a run going to the bottom of the seventh, but Lexie Stohr hit a game-tying homer with one out. Both teams scored in the eighth. Catawba got a leadoff double by Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy) to plate Taylor Martin (Salisbury, N.C./W. Rowan), who started the inning at second. The Lady Indians had a chance to add to the lead after Shumaker went to third on a one-out single by Delane Smith (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest), but Kathryn Woody wiggled out of trouble with a strikeout and a ground out.
West Georgia tied the game in the bottom of the eighth as tiebreaker runner Raven Smith scored on a wild pitch. In the ninth, a pair of groundouts with a runner at third denied Catawba a chance to take the lead. The Wolves opened their ninth with a single and won the game on Stohr’s sacrifice fly.
Ashley Wagoner (Roaring River, N.C./E. Wilkes) had a three-hit game for Catawba and gave the Lady Indians a 4-3 lead with her two-run homer in the sixth. Shumaker, Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) and Lynnsey Taylor (Hope Mills, N.C./Grays Creek) had two hits.
Wagoner had two hits in the earlier loss to Augusta. Smith also had two hits and Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston) scored two runs.
Down 2-0 after an inning, Catawba tied it up in the second. Three singles loaded the bases and a walk to Keri Faulkner (Albemarle, N.C./N. Stanly) brought home the first run. Grace Holland’s (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) grounder to first scored the tying run.
The Jaguars took the lead back in the third with a pair of runs and added another in the fifth to go up 5-2. Catawba struck for two runs in the sixth. Smith had sacrifice fly and Stinnard tripled home a run. The Lady Indians opened the seventh with walks by Shumaker and Turner. After a sacrifice by Smith moved the runners up, Morgan Hunter got a strikeout and ground out to end the game.
Catawba travels to Clearwater, Fla., this coming weekend to take part in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. First up for the Lady Indians will be Wayne State, of Michigan, on Friday at noon. Catawba will also face Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday.
