Fanzo's OT Goal Lifts Men's Lacrosse to Opening Win

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. -- Sophomore Cole Fanzo (Crofton, Md./S. River) scored a minute and a half into overtime to lift visiting Catawba to a 10-9 season-opening men’s lacrosse victory over Young Harris on Tuesday afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.  Catawba had tied the game on Dalton Cook’s (St. Augustine's, Fla./Bartram Trail) goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Fanzo led Catawba with four goals.  Cook had two goals, while Trevor Bellotte (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) had two goals and an assist.  Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) made 15 saves in goal, including a key stop near the end of regulation.

The Catawba Indians led 4-0 after a quarter.  Colin Beecham (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton) notched the season’s first goal at the 10:40 mark with Bellotte scoring both of his goals in the period.  Young Harris battled back, keeping Catawba scoreless in the second to lead 5-4 at the break.  Garrett Blake scored all three of his goals in the run.

Fanzo scored twice in the opening two minutes of the second half and the teams went back-and-forth until the end.  The Mountain Lions tallied back-to-back to go up 7-6 before Cook tied it.  Bevan Pate had YHC up at the end of the third after his goal with 47 seconds left.

Reid Lichtenberger (Austin, Texas/Vandergrift) tied the game for the Indians early in the fourth, but Duncan Jackson returned the lead to Young Harris with 9:56 to go.  Cook would again pull Catawba even, tying the game at 9-9 with 8:30 to go.

Young Harris had possession inside the final minute, but Applegate stopped a shot by Sam Gasta and Catawba cleared.  Beecham’s shot to win it was blocked.  In overtime, YHC won the faceoff, but had a turnover after a minute of possession.  Catawba called timeout after the clear and Fanzo netted the winner on an assist from Chase Scott (Charlotte, N.C./S. Mecklenburg).

Catawba will host Belmont Abbey on Friday at 4 pm.
