SALISBURY, N.C. -- Newberry shot 60% in the second half to rally for a 92-87 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym.  The Wolves improve to 14-9 overall and 9-8 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians see a six-game winning streak end and fall to 16-7 and 10-7.

Catawba held the lead from the outset until D.J. Copeland connected on a three-pointer to put Newberry up 65-63 with 12:04 remaining.  The Indians had led by as much as 11 and held a 63-56 edge before a 14-0 run by the Wolves.

Mason Spease hit back-to-back three-pointer to start the run and added a third after Copleland’s triple for a 68-63 edge.  Catawba rebounded and retook the lead at 78-77 on a layup by Gilbert McGregor (New Orleans, La./Lusher Charter/Wake Forest) with 4:57 left.

Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg) hit two free throws following a layup by Sikander Nielsen to keep Catawba up 80-79, but a jumper by Quaman Burton with 4:17 left gave the Wolves the lead for good.  After the Indians missed two free throws, Spease canned another three-pointer for an 84-80 margin with 3:48 left.

Morrison brought Catawba within 86-83 with 1:37 to go, but Newberry got a big rebound on its only missed shot in the final two minutes and Marshall Lange converted the second chance into a three-point play and an 89-83 lead with only 54 seconds to go.  Up four, Newberry missed a free throw with 13 seconds left, but Morrison missed on a three-pointer with five seconds remaining and the Wolves prevailed.

Spease and Gerald Evans led Newberry with 15 points each.  Lange added 13, while Burton and Copeland both tallied a dozen.  The Wolves hit on 12 three-pointers in the win and helped force 20 Catawba turnovers to offset Catawba’s 52-32 edge on the boards.

Morrison posted a double-double for Catawba with 22 points and 15 rebounds.  Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) collected 18 points.  Rakeen Brown (Hampton, Va./Bethel/Delaware St.) scored 14 and Troy Warren (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) added 13.

Catawba will host Anderson on Saturday at 4 pm.
