Men Set Record in 400 Medley Relay on Day 2 at BMC Championships
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba continued action at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimming Championships at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center on Thursday and tonight it was the men’s 400 medley relay, in the final event of the night, that established a new school record. The Catawba Indian men moved up to seventh in the overall standings with 163 points and the women moved to ninth on 143 points.
The 400 medley relay team of Dominik Brus, Federico Higareda, Joao Barreto and Aly Hegazi posted a time of 3.20.08 to finish fifth. They bettered the five-year-old mark by a second and a half. Hegazi made the first individual final for a Catawba swimmer earlier in the meet. He would place eighth in 500 free (4:40.03).
Mario Zaninovic would go 10th in the 500 free. His time of 4:36.40 marked the third fastest in school history and edged Hegazi’s mark of 4:36.67 that he swam in the prelims to make the final. Both times were NCAA ‘B’ cuts.
Higareda picked up a win in the ‘B’ final of the 200 IM. His time of 1:50.86 was a NCAA ‘B’ cut swim and the fourth best in school history. Brus would go 19th in a time of 1:55.10. Barreto would swim to a 16th-place finish in the 50 free (21.35).
A day after setting the 50 back record in the opening leg of the medley relay, Amy Cujas nearly broke her own record in the 50 free. Her time of 24.29 won the ‘C’ final and was just .07 off her previous record. Jess Daniel was 24th in the 200 IM (2:18.27) and the 400 medley relay team of Cujas, Shear, Daniel and Najar finished seventh in a time of 4:40.34.
The meet will continue through Saturday.
