Softball Falls to Valdosta in Final Game at NFCA Leadoff Classic
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Catawba fell to Valdosta State 12-3 in its final softball game at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday at the Moore Softball Complex. The Catawba Indians fell 0-9 on the year, while the Blazers improved to 7-2.
A six-run fifth by Valdosta blew open a close game and the Blazers tacked on three more in the seventh. Jessica Mohl went 4-for-5 with four RBI, while Haley Garrett had three hits.
Catawba got two hits each from Kirsten Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill), Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy) and Grace Holland (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford). Holland and Taylor Martin (Salisbury, N.C./W. Rowan) had a RBI.
Down 2-0 in the third, Catawba rallied to tie the game. Singles by Stinnard and Shumaker around a walk to Monica Taylor (Weaverville, N.C./N. Buncombe/UNCW) loaded the bases with one out. Holland singled home Stinnard and pinch-runner Nicole Hunter (Thomasville, N.C./Wheatmore) scored on a wild pitch. Catawba hit into some tough luck as Ashley Wagoner (Roaring River, N.C./E. Wilkes) lined into a double play at third to end the inning.
Valdosta State went back on top in the fourth as Garrett doubled home a run then the Blazers broke things open with the six-run frame in the fifth. Mohl and Lacey Crandell had two-run doubles for VSU. Martin’s sacrifice fly in the fifth brought home Catawba’s final run.
Catawba will be at home on Tuesday as the Lady Indians will host Belmont Abbey in a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
