Softball Earns Split of Sunday Games at Catawba Inv.
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba topped Goldey-Beacom before falling to Mount Olive on Sunday softball action at the Catawba Invitational Tournament at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians took an 8-3 decision over Goldey-Beacom then dropped a 7-6 contest to Mount Olive. The Catawba Indians are now 4-11 on the season.
Against Goldey-Beacom, Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) had three hits and drove in two during a four-run fourth that put the Lady Indians up 5-1. Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy) and Leah Huggins (Hope Mills, N.C./Gray’s Creek) both had two hits with a RBI.
Kaylee Cook (Kannapolis, N.C./Brown) also had two hits and hurled a complete-game win in the circle. She gave up three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in picking up her first win.
Catawba trailed Mount Olive 7-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, but rallied to within a run before the Trojans got a strikeout with the bases loaded to hold on. With two out, three straight singles loaded the bases and Huggins brought in two with a single. Ashley Wagoner (Roaring River, N.C./E. Wilkes) singled home a run, but the Lady Indians came up a run short.
Down 1-0, Mount Olive scored five runs in the fifth to take the lead. Before an out was recorded Jennibeth Burge doubled home two runs and Karen Foley followed with a three-run homer. Foley would get the save with two innings of relief after surviving the seventh.
Huggins had two hits and drove in three in the nightcap. Delane Smith (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest) also had two hits.
Catawba plays host to Limestone for a double header on Wednesday beginning at 1 pm.
