Volleyball falls in three to USC-SpartanburgSALISBURY, NC – Visiting USC-Spartanburg swept a volleyball match from host Catawba on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym, winning by the scores of 30-17, 35-33 and 30-19. The Rifles improve to 8-2, while Catawba falls to 6-4. Stephanie Coff (St. Louis, MO) helped Spartanburg to a lead in game one, recording four kills and an ace as the Rifles jumped to a 9-5 edge. A pair of kills and a block by Amber Glass (Spartanburg, SC) upped the lead to 19-9. Glass posted six kills in the game. Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) had four kills for Catawba. Game two went back-and-forth as Spartanburg took control with a six point run, aided by three kills from Christie Bishop (Spartanburg, SC) in a six point run to give the Rifles a 22-18 lead. Crystal Bonner (Yadkinville, NC) served two aces in a six point run for the Lady Indians, who took a 17-26 lead. The teams would trade points until a combo block by Glass and Katie Hurst (Spokane, WA) gave Spartanburg a 33-32 edge. Bishop finished the game with seven kills and an ace. Spartanburg completed the sweep, jumping to a 20-12 lead in the third game. Glass had three kills and a block in the game. Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN) had five kills in the game for Catawba. The Lady Indians played without Hope Miller (Newton, NC), the team's leader in kills, digs and aces, who was out with an injury.
