Women's Basketball Falls to Wingate
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate notched its 11th-straight win with a 73-61 victory over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs, ranked 25th, improve to 22-4 overall and 18-3 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 15-11 and 12-9.
Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance) produced her 11th double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) chipped in with 11 points, while Serena Brown (Ft. Washington, Md./Bowie) and Madison Hallman (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) each had 10.
Caroline Averette came off the bench to lead Wingate with 17 points. Courtney Robinson added 13 off the bench.
After an early 9-4 lead, Catawba fell behind late in the first quarter and could never catch up. Catawba stayed with the hot Bulldogs for a half, trailing only 39-32 despite Wingate canning 62% in the second quarter and 56% for the half.
The Lady Indians were down just four early in the third quarter, but Wingate pulled out to a 60-50 lead by the end of the frame. The Bulldogs led by double digits most of the fourth quarter.
Catawba will play its final home game of the year on Saturday as the Lady Indians host another nationally-ranked team in Lincoln Memorial at 2 pm.
