Morrison's 24 Points Helps Pace Men's Basketball Past Wingate
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rolled to an 89-57 men’s basketball win over visiting Wingate behind 24 points from Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg). The South Atlantic Conference win moves the Catawba Indians to 18-9 overall and 12-9 in the league. The Bulldogs fall to 18-9 and 15-6.
The Indians never trailed and took the lead for good at 5-2 on Troy Warren’s (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) three-point play at the 17:46 mark of the first half. The lead grew to 27-11 after Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) hit on back-to-back three-pointers.
The Indians shot 60% in the opening half in racing to a 46-33 lead. The Bulldogs closed the gap to 47-37 early in the second half, but that was as close as Wingate would come. Rakeen Brown (Hampton, Va./Bethel/Delaware St.) hit consecutive three-pointer to push the Catawba lead to 64-45 midway through the second half.
Morrison had 17 of his points in the first half. Four other Indians reached double figures. Taylor netted 15 points with Warren scoring a dozen with nine rebounds. Brown and KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh/Henry CC) both had 11 points.
Anthanee Doyle led Wingate, who shot just 35%, with 16 points. Zeriq Lolar added 10 points. Catawba dominated the glass, 45-24, and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds that led to 21 points.
Catawba hosts Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at 4 pm in its final home game of the year.
