Softball Falls Twice Saturday at Mid-South Classic
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Catawba dropped a pair of games on Saturday at the Mid-South Classic Softball Tournament being held at Tyger River Park. The Catawba Indians fell 10-2 to Limestone and 2-0 to Flagler leaving their record at 5-14.
Limestone jumped on Catawba hurler Brooke Walser (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson), who had nearly no-hit the Saints on Wednesday. Limestone scored three in the first and two more in the third to go up 5-1. The Saints finished with a dozen hits.
Catawba had seven hits, two each from Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) and Delane Smith (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest). Smith and Monica Taylor (Weaverville, N.C./N. Buncombe/UNCW) drove in the Lady Indians runs.
Kaylee Cook (Kannapolis, N.C./Brown) pitched well in the loss to Flagler. She allowed just two run off eight hits over eight innings. The Lady Indians got three hits for Stinnard and two from Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy), but could not push across a run.
Ally Marcano pitched the shutout for Flagler and stuck out three without a walk. The Saints scored both runs in the first inning. Mackenzie Conley doubled home a run with one then came home as Maddy Murphy followed with a triple.
Catawba will face Mount Olive on Sunday as it continues play at the tournament at 10 am. The Lady Indians tangle with UNC Pembroke at 2:30 pm in their final game.
