Softball Splits Sunday Games at Mid South Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Catawba split a pair of games at the Mid-South Classic Softball Tournament on Sunday at Tyger River Park.  The Catawba Indians stand at 5-16 after a 7-4 win over Mount Olive and a 4-2 loss to UNC Pembroke.

Catawba jumped on Mount Olive with five runs in the first inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit.  Ashley Wagoner (Roaring River, N.C./E. Wilkes) had a two-run double, while Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy) and Grace Holland (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) also drove in a run.

The Trojans pulled within 5-4 in the third after a two-run triple from Callie Ferrell.  Brooke Walser (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) settled down after that retiring 13 of the final 14 batters and 11 in a row.  Catawba got some insurance in the sixth as Lynnsey Taylor (Hope Mills, N.C./Gray’s Creek) double home a run and later scored on a groundout by Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston).

Turner finished with three hits, while Taylor and Delane Smith (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest) had two.  Walser (4-4) scattered eight hits, walked nine and fanned six.

The Lady Indians fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first against UNC Pembroke with Jamie Johnson hitting a leadoff home run.  Taylor scored on a single by Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) in the third, but UNCP answered as Abbey Walters singled home a run in the fourth with her third hit of the game.

Catawba loaded the bases in the sixth and got a run on an infield single by Leah Huggins (Hope Mills, N.C./Gray’s Creek), but Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) was caught off second and the Trojans got out of trouble.  The Lady Indians put two on in the seventh, but a double play ended it.

Stinnard had two hits for Catawba.  Turner pitched well in relief, tossing seven innings and allowing just one run on six hits with eight strikeouts.

Catawba travels to Columbus, Ga., next weekend for a tournament that will see the Lady Indians face Columbus State, Auburn Montgomery and Barry.
