Bowden's 5-for-5 Day Helps Lead Baseball Past UNC Pembroke

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba held off a UNC Pembroke rally to claim a 15-11 win in a baseball game stopped in the seventh inning due to lightning and rain.  The Catawba Indians, ranked 21st in NCAA II, complete a perfect nine game home stand to improve to 11-3.  The Braves fall to 12-3.

Catawba bolted to a 10-1 lead after two innings then saw the Braves pull within 13-11 after the top of the seventh.  The Indians scored twice in the bottom half and had the bases loaded with one out when the game was stopped.

Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) went 5-for-5 with three doubles and a home run.  Jeremy Simpson (Cleveland, N.C./W. Rowan) added four hits and Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) three.  All three drove in two runs.

Nick Debo had three hits and a pair of home runs for UNC Pembroke.  River Ryan also collected three hits and Hayden Buffkin drove in three.  Both Ryan and Buffkin hit home runs.

Catawba’s first six batters picked up a hit off Brave starter Jesse Stinnett (0-3).  Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan), the two-time reigning conference and NCBWA hitter of the week, erased an early 1-0 deficit as he led off the home half with his eighth round-tripper of the season.  Nick Coble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Florence-Darlington) added a two-run homer to up the lead to 4-1 and the final two runs of the inning scored on an error.

The Indians were back at in the second.  Bowden’s first double drove in a run and Hanes doubled home two more off reliever Dale Masterson.  By the time Masterson got out of the inning, UNCP trailed 10-1.

Debo hit a solo homer in the fourth and followed a two-run homer by Buffkin in the fifth with his second to make it 10-5.  Bowden led off the sixth for Catawba and the Indians went on to lead 13-6 after adding two more runs in the inning.

The Braves climbed back in it with five runs in the seventh.  Justin Dattilo got the first run in on a sacrifice fly then Jarrett Mobley singled home two before Ryan’s home run.  Ryan Kahny (High Point, N.C./Central) got the final out of the seventh and would earn a save.

Bryan Ketchie (Woodleaf, N.C./W. Rowan) tossed five innings to improve to 3-0 for the Indians.  He allowed five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.  All nine batters in Catawba’s lineup produced a hit.

Catawba travels to Lenoir-Rhyne to open a three-game series on Friday against the 26th-ranked Bears.  Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 6 pm with a 1 pm Saturday doubleheader.
