Overtime Loss Ends Season For Men's Basketball
WINGATE, N.C. -- Wingate turned back an upset bit by sixth-seeded Catawba to take a 91-85 overtime win in the opening round of the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 20-9 and advance to a Saturday semifinal meeting with Queens. The Catawba Indians see their season end at 18-11.
The Bulldogs overcame a 10-point deficit with six minutes left to tie the game at 68-all on three free throws by Anthanee Doyle then came back from five down with just over a minute left to send the game to overtime. Down 73-68, Keith Griffin was fouled on a layup to cut the margin to 73-70 with 1:30 remaining. Isiah Cureton rebounded the miss for the Bulldogs and Doyle canned a three-pointer to tie with 40 seconds to go.
It ended a big run by Doyle at the end as he hit on two three-pointers just before his free throws tied the game then added another to send the game to the extra period. Catawba had a shot to win, but Rakeen Brown’s (Hampton, Va./Bethel/Delaware St.) jumper in the lane was off the mark.
The Indians made a push to take control of the game in the last five minutes of the first half. Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) put Catawba up 25-24 and started an 18-6 run by the Indians over the final five minutes. The Indians held the lead until overtime where Wingate scored the first basket and never trailed again.
Taylor was one of two players for Catawba with a double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Troy Warren (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) had 12 points and 16 boards. Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg) almost joined the duo, finishing with 21 points and nine boards. Malik Constantine (Binghamton, N.Y./Olympic(NC) pumped in 14 points off the bench.
Josh Dominguez scored 22 points for Wingate, going 11-for-11 at the line. Cureton scored 21 off the bench with eight rebounds. Doyle scored 17 and Keith Griffin 15, while Mike Baez contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams shot 40%, with Wingate holding a 48-46 edge on the boards. The Bulldogs committed three more turnovers and connected on 10 three-pointer to eight for Catawba. The big stat difference was at the line where Wingate went 25-of-31 with the Indians 13-of-13.
