Late Cold Spell Denies Women's Basketball A Second Tourney Upset
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Wingate survived an upset by seventh-seeded Catawba, ending the game on a 15-2 run, to grab a 57-54 victory in the semifinals of the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Furman’s Timmons Arena. The third-seeded Bulldogs improve to 24-5 and advance to Sunday’s final against top-seeded Lincoln Memorial. The Catawba Indians end their season at 16-13.
Catawba built a 52-42 lead with 6:48 remaining, but failed to make a field goal the rest of the game. The Lady Indians went 0-for-7 from the field and committed five turnovers. Catawba also missed four free throws down the stretch.
After falling behind by ten, Wingate went on a 11-0 run to take the lead which it had not held since the four-minute mark of the first quarter. Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance) ended the Wingate run of 13 points on two free throws with 31 seconds to play.
Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) stole the ensuing inbounds play at midcourt and was fouled. Catawba was unable to cash in as Johnson missed on both shots. Wingate went to the line with 11 seconds to go and got a free throw by Shelby Tricoli to lead 56-54.
Serena Brown (Ft. Washington, Md./Bowie) was called for a travel on a drive to the basket with eight seconds left and the Bulldogs added another free throw with seven seconds to go. Brown’s three-pointer at the buzzer to tie was short.
Johnson led Catawba with 21 points, going 8-of-12 from the field. Rogers added 13 points with Madison Hallman (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) scoring seven off the bench. Brown handed out nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds as she suffered through a tough shooting afternoon, going just 1-for-12.
Caroline Averette led Wingate with 14 points. Tricoli and Danasia Witherspoon each had a dozen. Marta Miscenko pulled down 11 rebounds.
Both teams grabbed 32 rebounds and the Lady Indians had one more turnover. Catawba shot just 34% and were only 3-of-14 (21%) in the fourth quarter, while missing all six three-point tries and going just 2-of-6 at the line. Wingate shot 41% for the game and were 6-of-10 in the fourth quarter.
