Volleyball falls in three in SAC openerSALISBURY, NC – Host Catawba College was swept by visiting Presbyterian 3-0 in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Blue Hose won by the scores of 30-24, 30-28 and 31-29 and improved to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 6-5 and 0-1. The Blue Hose used strong play by Jasmin Brown (Alpharetta, GA) and Donja Bobbitt (San Antonio, TX) to forge an early 17-9 in the opening game. Each would post four kills and an ace in the game, while Mitchell added a pair of blocks. Catawba grabbed the lead in game two behind the hitting of Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN), who recorded three early kills as the Lady Indians went up 13-9. Presbyterian took a 24-23 lead on a kill by Erin Friday (Summerville, SC), then went up 28-25 after three straight points. Catawba stayed close, as a kill by Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) and a block by Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC) erased game points to close gap to 29-28, but a kill by Bobbitt ended the game. Presbyterian would take a 13-9 lead in the third game, getting three kills and an ace by Friday. Catawba would fight back with six straight points, two on aces by Hawkins, to lead 15-13. Another ace by Hawkins and two blocks by Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) put Catawba on top 25-21. The Blue Hose would reel off six straight points, getting a kill and two aces by Lindsay Mitchell (Chapin, SC) and a kill and block by Brown to lead 29-27. Catawba would again fight off game points with a kill by Harrison and a block by Hawkins, but a kill by Brown and a Catawba error ended the match. Friday led Presbyterian with 15 kills and 11 digs, while Brown had 14 kills. Mitchell and Bobbitt each reached double figures in kills with 10, with Mitchell adding nine digs, five blocks and a pair of aces. Hewitt led the Lady Indians with 11 kills and added three blocks. Harrison had seven kills and four blocks. Catawba was playing its second straight match without leading hitter Hope Miller (Newton, NC), who is out with an ankle injury.
