Baseball Splits Doubleheader at LR

HICKORY, N.C. -- Catawba and host Lenoir-Rhyne split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bears Field.  The Bears, ranked 26th in NCAA II, took the opener 6-2, while the 21st-ranked Catawba Indians won game two 13-7.  Catawba now stands at 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while LR is 14-4 and 3-2.

Thomas St. Claire fanned 16 Catawba batters in winning the opener.  He improved to 6-0 with the complete game win.  St. Clair allowed two runs, one earned, off eight hits and a pair of walks.

After surrendering an unearned run in the third, the Bears posted a pair of runs in the bottom half and kept the lead from there.  LR got both runs on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice by Zach Jacobs.  Justin Dean’s two-run homer in the fourth made it 4-1.

Catawba produced eight hits in the opener, but only had two on in an inning only twice after the third.  One of those times was the seventh when Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) singled home Jeremy Simpson (Cleveland, N.C./W. Rowan).

Simpson, who scored twice, joined Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) with two hits for the Indians.  Dean collected four hits for Lenoir-Rhyne.

Simpson and Setzer stayed hot in game two as each picked up three hits in a 13-hit attack.  The Indians took a big lead after a six-run second put Catawba up 7-1.  Setzer had a two-run homer in the frame, while Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) had a two-run triple.

Lenoir-Rhyne made it interesting in the fifth, cutting an 8-1 deficit to 8-6.  David Newcomer capped the inning with a three-run homer.

Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) homered in the sixth to put Catawba up 9-6 and the Indians used a pair of errors in the seventh to plate four more runs.

Nick Coble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Florence-Darlington) improved to 2-0 with the win.  He pitched into the fifth and gave up six runs on six hits with five strikeouts.  Heath Mitchem (Salisbury, N.C./Carson) earned his first save.  He got the final two outs of the sixth and after the first three Bears had hits to start the seventh, he settled down to retire the final three batters.

The teams will conclude the three-game league series on Sunday with a 1 pm first pitch.
